06.10.12 Marc Gruber has won the Jürgen Hauschildt Best Paper Award in Innovation Management for the study “Knowledge Recombination across Technological Boundaries: Scientists versus Engineers” (with Dietmar Harhoff & Karin Hoisl), Management Science. The award is given out in honor of the late Jürgen Hauschildt and awarded yearly by the TIE Commission of the Verband der Hochschullehrer für Betriebswirtschaft (VHB).

03.10.11 The co-edited volume “Frontiers of Entrepreneurship Research 2010” (Zacharakis, A. et al.), Babson College, Babson Park, MA, 2010, has been published.  Frontiers of Entrepreneurship Research (FER) is a compilation of the conference proceedings and of the top 40 papers presented each year at the Babson College Entrepreneurship Research Conference (BCERC). The recently published 2010 Volume is co-edited by Professor Marc Gruber.

02.09.10 Marc Gruber’s recent paper “From Minds to Markets: How Human Capital Endowments Shape Market Opportunity Identification of Technology Start-ups” (with MacMillan, I.C./ Thompson, J.D.) has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Management.


30.07.10 Marc Gruber’s paper “Individual and Opportunity Factors Influencing Job Creation in New Firms” (with J. Dencker, S. Shah) is the winner of the 2009 “Thought Leaders Award” by the Entrepreneurship Division of the Academy of Management (held in Montreal, August 2010). The award committee honors the best published papers in entrepreneurship in 2009 in three categories: foundational; thought-leader; and research promise.


28.06.10 We mourn the unexpected passing of Mr Nicolas Hayek and share the grief with his family and relatives. Mr Hayek discussed the topic of entrepreneurship during the Babson Research Conference at EPFL on June 10, and we are very grateful to have had the opportunity to interact with him in person. His inspiring talk on the principles of entrepreneurship and his visionary ideas will always be remembered.

20.11.09 Jeffrey Petty & Marc Gruber’s recent paper “This Deal is Dead! A Longitudinal Study of VC Decision Making” has been awared the Irene M. McCarthy Award for the Best Paper on the Topic of High Technology at the Babson College Entrepreneurship Research Conference (BCERC). The award will be presented at the 2010 BCERC conference.

20.12.08 Prof. Marc Gruber was selected to join the editiorial review board of Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice (ET&P) for the period of 2009 to 2011. ET&P is one of the premier journals in the field of Entrepreneurship.


10.09.08 ENTC is happy to announce that six high potential EPFL technologies are used as real-life cases in the PhD class on entrepreneural opportunity identification and exploitation. Throughout the term, students will get taught in technology commercialization and will work to identify attractive market applications for the emerging technologies.

Shah) was chosen as one of the 4 finalists for the All-Academy 2008 Carolyn Dexter Best International Paper Award at the Academy of Management Conference in Anaheim, California.


28.05.08 ENTC congratulates the team from FluxEXPLORER for winning this year’s “Prix du Jeune Entrepreneur”. FluxEXPLORER is an EPFL-based start-up that commercializes a laser-based diagnostic system for the real-time visualization of blood flow in the skin. Several teaching programs at CDM–in particular ENTC’s doctoral class on Opportunity Recognition and the Executive MBA in MoT–have supported this start-up through its early stages. We wish FluxEXPLORER continued success!


11.04.08 Marc Gruber’s recent paper entitled “Individual, Organizational & Environmental Drivers of Job Creation in New Firms” (with J. Dencker and S. Shah) has been accepted for the Best Paper Proceedings of the Academy of Management Meeting 2008.This paper is also a nominee for the 2008 Carolyn Dexter Award at the AoM.


02.04.08 ENTC congratulates Barbara Yersin, a participant of our 2007 PhD class on “Entrepreneurial Opportunity Identification and Exploitation”. With “MingleMakers”, her EPFL-based venture project (together with Jonathan Maim), she won a place in this year’s venture leaders competition, thus receiving a CH 10’000 worth training at the Babson College in Boston/USA.


19.03.08 The new Report of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (Switzerland) has just been published. Marc Gruber has co-authored this report for EPFL.About GEM: The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor is a not-for-profit academic research consortium that has as its goal making high quality international research data on entrepreneurial activity readily available to as wide an audience as possible. 20.02.08 ENTC congratulates Vincent Schickel-Zuber, a participant of our 2007 PhD class on “Entrepreneurial Opportunity Identification and Exploitation”. He has successfully mastered the first round in this year’s Venture Kick competition, thus receiving financial support (10’000 CHF) for his venture Prediggo.

02.12.06 Prof. Marc Gruber will join the Swiss research team of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) and represent EPFL in this capacity.The GEM research program is an annual assessment of the national level of entrepreneurial activity. Initiated in 1999 with 10 countries, expanded to 21 in the year 2000, with 29 countries in 2001 and 37 countries in 2002. GEM 2006 was conducted in 39 countries. The research program, based on a harmonized assessment of the level of national entrepreneurial activity for all participating countries, involves exploration of the role of entrepreneurship in national economic growth. Systematic differences continue, with few highly entrepreneurial countries reflecting low economic growth. There is, further, a wealth of national features and characteristics associated with entrepreneurial activity.For more information visit http://www.gemconsortium.org/


0.11.06 One of the central goals of ENTC is to teach and support students from all over EPFL in the area of entrepreneurship.We are proud to announce that in this Winter term, Prof. Gruber is teaching PhD students coming from the following departments/faculties: CDM, EDAR, EDBB, EDCH, EDIC, EDME, EDMI, EDMT, EDMX, EDNE, EDPO, EDPY, PH-DOC, Sc-doc, STI.In addition, Prof. Gruber is supervising a thesis in the Faculté ENAC (Environnement Naturel, Architectural et Construit).

13.09.06 Marc Gruber’s recent research paper entitled “Venture capitalists’ evaluations of start-up teams: Trade-offs, knock-out criteria, and the impact of VC experience”  will be published in Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice (ETP), 2007.The recent SSCI citation report indicated that ETP had an impact factor of 1.537. This placed ETP 12th among all “management” journals and ahead of such notable journals as Journal of Management and Journal of Management Studies.
